Rose Bowl Encounter: A Clash of Titans
The Wolverines improved to 3-3 all-time in their sixth encounter against Alabama. It was the fifth postseason matchup and the first-ever meeting between the two programs in the Rose Bowl. The Wolverines, who are at 9-12 overall, participated in the program’s 21st Rose Bowl today. Michigan achieved program win number 1,003 in a game between the two most successful programs in college football history. Alabama has won 965 games.
Overtime Triumph and Unblemished Record.
After the Wolverines defeated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 48-42 in 2020, the Rose Bowl was both Michigan’s first overtime game of the season and the program’s first since then. Of the 17 games played in overtime, U-M has won 14 of them overall. In addition, it was the first CFP game to go into overtime since the new rules require teams to shoot for two points following the opening set of scores. In program history, U-M’s third overtime-filled bowl game occurred in the Rose Bowl. J.J. McCarthy’s Stellar Performance.
During J.J. McCarthy’s 27 career starts at quarterback, Michigan is 26-1 with a 96.3 winning percentage, which is the best record of any starting quarterback in the previous 20 years or more. This win rate is higher than Tua Tagovailoa (22-2; 91.7), Trevor Lawrence (34-2; 94.4), and other players. McCarthy (2,851) surpassed his passing total from the 2022 season (2,719) and moved up to sixth place all-time in passing yards in a season, surpassing both his coach .
After McCarthy (49) passed Rick Leach (48) and tied Denard Robinson (49) for fourth place in career passing touchdowns at Michigan with three touchdown passes in the Rose Bowl. Running back Blake Corum (25 this season, 56 in total) gained the school single-season rushing touchdown record and eclipsed Anthony Thomas (55), owning the all-time career rushing touchdown record at Michigan, with his 17-yard rush in overtime Corum earned 150 points in the 2023 season, which is a new record for the most points scored in a single season (previous: Jake Moody, 147 in 2022). This was his third career receiving touchdown in the first quarter.
Individual Feats and Defensive Dominance.
In the second quarter, wide receiver Tyler Morris caught his longest career reception of 38 yards for his first career touchdown. Josh Wallace, the defensive back who caused a fumble against Iowa in the Big Ten Championship game, has now contributed to a turnover in two straight games with his fumble recovery in the fourth quarter. According to AP Sports, the Wolverines set an all-time College Football Playoff record for sacks in a half with five sacks in the first half alone, tying their previous single-game season high in just 30 minutes (four by Clemson in the 2016 National Championship game). According to ESPN Stats & Info, it was only the fourth occasion in Nick Saban’s stint at Alabama that the Tide had five sacks in a half (2021, 2013, 2010). U-M had seven sacks at the end of the contest. Alabama’s season-low 288 total offensive yards (previous: 306) were achieved. This season, U-M has only given up more than 300 total offensive yards to two teams (Ohio State, 395; Nebraska, 305).
