Canada-India relations deteriorate: Punjabis will be most affected.
Canada-India relations deteriorate: Punjabis constitute 2.6% of the total population of Canada; Business and jobs will be affected; students can also kill.
Tension has increased between the governments of both the countries, because Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made serious allegations of Indian government’s involvement in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The Indian government has completely rejected the allegations leveled against Trudeau. This conflict that started between the two countries will not only affect trade but will also affect Indians living in Canada, especially Punjabis. After India, Canada has the highest number of students.
The total population of Canada is approximately 3 crore 82 lakh, out of which 2.6 percent, i.e. 9 lakh 42 thousand 170 people are Punjabi. People from Punjab work in Canada and are very influential in the business world there. Punjabis completely dominate, especially in agriculture and dairy farming. Apart from Punjabis, there are many Indians in Canada. A large number of people from Haryana, Rajasthan, UP, New Delhi and many states of South India live in Canada. Thousands of students from India also go to Canada every year.
Canada-India relations deteriorate: what’s the matter?
The latest dispute between India and Canada began during the G20 summit held in New Delhi on September 9 and 10. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who arrived to participate in the G20 summit, raised the issue of increasing Khalistani activities in his country with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi asked the Canadian government to take necessary action to stop separatist activities in the country.
On this, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau clearly told Modi that the Indian government will not interfere in Canadian politics and domestic affairs. Not only this, Trudeau also raised the issue of the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar with Modi. He described Nijjar as a citizen of his country. The Indian government did not give much importance to Trudeau’s words at that time.
As soon as Justin Trudeau reached Canada after the G20 summit, he said in the Parliament there that Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed by the Indian government. The Indian diplomat was also deported by the Canadian government. Taking strong cognizance of this action of Canada, the Indian government rejected all the allegations leveled against Trudeau and asked a Canadian diplomat to leave the country within five days.
3 big effects of this dispute that started between the two countries.
1.Loss of billions in business
If we look at the figures, both the countries had done trade worth 7 billion dollars in the financial year 2021-22. The two countries have done trade worth $8.16 billion in the first six months of the current financial year (2022-23). The ongoing talks on a free trade agreement (FTA) between India and Canada have come to a halt soon after the G20 summit. Trade between the two countries may be affected if the current tension continues.
2.Punjabi farmers will be affected in Canada
Punjabis have a major influence in the agriculture, horticulture and dairy farming sectors of Canada. Punjabis, i.e. Indians, living in India get direct benefits from this, as agriculture and agricultural products are supplied from Canada. If India-Canada relations deteriorate, it will directly impact Indians.
A case from November 2017 may illustrate its impact. The Government of India had increased the tariff to 50% to control the export of yellow peas. This had a bad impact on Indians farming in Canada, as they had to send their produce to Pakistan at very low prices.
3.Sword of deportation on students
At present about one lakh 60 thousand students of Punjab are studying in Canada. All of them have gone there on study visas. Every year 50 thousand youth of Punjab alone go abroad to study. These youth, along with their studies, also do small jobs in Canada and other countries. If the fee of Rs 25 lakh per student is also considered, then about Rs 12,500 crore goes abroad every year from Punjab. This amount comes from taxes paid in exchange for visas, college, and living abroad. Canada participates the most in it. Canada would never want this income to end. But the Canadian government may make its rules more stringent for Indian students if the animosity between the two countries increases. This also includes canceling their visas and expelling them.
