Coronavirus Cases in India: The number of coronavirus infections is increasing nationwide, with the Ministry of Health reporting 752 new cases in the last 24 hours. During this period, 325 individuals have recovered, while 4 people have succumbed to the infection. The active cases in the country stand at 3,420, showing an increase from the previous day’s count of 2,998.
Kerala Leads in Active Cases, Followed by Karnataka
According to the Health Ministry, Kerala has reported the highest number of cases, with 565 new cases and 2 deaths. Karnataka follows with 70 new cases. One death each has been recorded in Karnataka and Rajasthan.
WHO Warning: 52% Increase in Infections in the Last Month
The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning about a 52% increase in coronavirus infections worldwide in the last month. Between November 19 and December 17, there have been 850,000 reported cases and 3,000 deaths. However, the death rate has decreased by 8% during this month, indicating that more people survived compared to the previous month.
Spread of JN.1 Variant in 41 Countries
According to WHO, the new JN.1 variant of the coronavirus has spread to 41 countries, with the highest number of cases reported in France, the United States, Britain, Singapore, Canada, and Sweden. In India, 23 cases of the new variant have been reported as of December 22. WHO assures that existing vaccines are effective against the JN.1 variant, but caution is advised.
Center’s Directive: Testing in All Districts
The central government has issued an advisory to all states in light of the new variant. States are advised to conduct maximum COVID-19 tests, and positive samples should be sent for genomic sequencing.
Special Awareness and Safety Guidelines in Kerala
Due to the rising COVID-19 cases in Kerala, special guidelines have been issued. Elderly individuals (above 60), those suffering from diseases, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers are advised to wear masks when going outside.
Arrival of JN.1 Variant and Safety Measures
According to Dr. Rajiv Bahl, the Director of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the first case of the JN.1 variant was reported in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on December 8. This variant was first identified in Luxembourg and has since spread to several countries.
First JN.1 Patient in the United States
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the first case of the JN.1 variant in the United States on December 8. It is estimated to be responsible for 15% to 29% of COVID-19 cases. The first case of JN.1 was reported in September in the US.
