Covid 19: The new variant of the coronavirus, JN.1, has made its presence felt in 40 countries around the world. India has reported 21 cases, including 19 in Goa and 1 each in Kerala and Maharashtra.

According to NITI Aayog, Increase in COVID-19-Related Deaths in India

NITI Aayog member Dr. VK Paul revealed on Wednesday that in the past two weeks, India has witnessed the deaths of 16 individuals due to COVID-19. However, the majority of these individuals were also grappling with other diseases such as diabetes and heart problems.

Active COVID-19 Cases in India: Approximately 2300, WHO’s Address

As per the central government, there are around 2300 active COVID-19 cases in the country, with 91-92% of individuals undergoing treatment at home. Patients with the new JN.1 variant exhibit mild symptoms, but WHO advises caution.

WHO’s Statement: JN.1 Designated as ‘Variant of Interest’

The World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized JN.1 as a ‘Variant of Interest.’ According to WHO, current analyses indicate that existing vaccines are effective against the JN.1 variant, posing no significant additional risk to individuals.

WHO’s Advisory: Precautionary Measures Issued

Despite the assurance of vaccine effectiveness, WHO has issued precautionary advisories. These include wearing masks in crowded or poorly ventilated areas and maintaining necessary physical distance.

Center’s Directive: Testing in All Districts

The central government has advised all districts to conduct COVID tests and send positive samples for genome sequencing. Regular preparedness assessments through mock drills are also recommended.

Advisory for States: Kerala and Tamil Nadu Urged to Enhance Vigilance

Due to the rising cases of the new COVID-19 variant JN.1 in neighboring states Kerala and Tamil Nadu, advisories have been issued to enhance vigilance in these regions.

Mandatory Masking: Special Emphasis for Elderly, Those with Health Conditions

People aged 60 and above, individuals with kidney, heart, liver diseases, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers are advised to wear masks compulsorily when going out.

Central Guidelines: No Immediate Border Controls, Caution Urged During Festivals

As per central directives, there is no need for immediate border controls or increased surveillance at the borders of states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu. However, bordering districts are advised to exercise caution. Special instructions for careful behavior during Christmas and New Year celebrations have also been given.

Origin of JN.1 Variant in India

According to Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the first case of the JN.1 variant was reported in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on December 8. The patient, a 79-year-old woman, showed mild symptoms resembling influenza but later recovered.

Spread of JN.1 in the United States: First Case Detected on December 8

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that the first case of the JN.1 variant in the United States was detected by September 8. The variant is estimated to be responsible for 15% to 29% of COVID cases in the country.
