India longest sea bridge: On Friday, the country’s longest sea-bridge, Atal Setu, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This bridge will connect Navi Mumbai to Mumbai. With this, the two-hour journey will be completed in 20 minutes. This bridge was inaugurated by Modi in December 2016. The entire cost of the bridge is Rs 17843 crore.

The 22.8 km long six-lane bridge is also known as Mumbai Trans Harbor Sea-Link (MTHL). 5.5 kilometers of the bridge is on land and 16.5 kilometers is on sea. This bridge has a capacity of 70 thousand vehicles every day. At present, about 50 thousand vehicles pass through the bridge every day.

According to MTHL’s website, use of the bridge saves one crore liters of fuel every year. This is equivalent to saving one crore rupees of fuel per day. Also, due to reduction in pollution levels, emissions of about 25,680 metric tons of CO2 will also be reduced.

5.04 lakh metric tonnes of cement and 1.78 lakh metric tonnes of steel were used to build the bridge. Four hundred CCTV cameras are installed in the bridge. Modern light and sound barriers have been installed on the bridge for the protection of birds and marine creatures. The life of the bridge will be a hundred years.

Connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai will be better.

Earlier there was Sanpada Highway to go from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. This journey used to take at least two hours, but because of Atal Setu it will now be completed in 20 minutes. Apart from this, it will also take less time to travel from Mumbai to Pune, Goa and North India.

Atal Setu will pass over Thane creek channels, Peer Pau jetty and Sewri mudflats. It will connect Chirle in Navi Mumbai and Sewri in Mumbai. MTHL will have a three-level interchange at the Sewri end to link to the Eastern Freeway and the Sewri-Worli elevated corridor. The bridge will be on the banks of Navi Mumbai at Shivaji Nagar and Chirle.

MTHL connectivity towards Navi Mumbai at 3 places: The first is Shivaji Nagar Interchange, which is towards Navi Mumbai; The second is Shivaji Nagar Interchange, which is along Coastal Road; And the third is Navi Mumbai International Airport and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).

Jassie Pass Ramp on SH-54: This will connect Uran State Highway (SH-54) to Panvel. National Highway 4B is in Jasai. It will connect Panvel, Uran and JNPT.

Bike-rickshaw ban, four wheeler, 100 km/hr.

Keeping in mind the safety of the people, some important guidelines have also been issued. This prohibits the operation of tractors, cars, motorbikes, mopeds, and three-wheelers on the bridge. The maximum speed of four-wheeler, mini bus and two-axle vehicle is 100 km/h. The speed on the ascents and descents of the bridge will not exceed forty kilometers per hour.

The one-way toll on the bridge is Rs 250 per car. At the same time, the toll for each car will be Rs 375. The monthly toll will be 50 times.

Noise barrier installed up to 8.5 KM stretch of the bridge.

The bridge was built at 15 meter sea level. This required digging 47 meters deep into the seabed. There are sensitive areas like ONGC, JNPT and Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) around the bridge.

Noise barrier has been installed for 8.5 km of the bridge and side barricading has been done for 6 km. Modern light and sound barriers have also been installed on the bridge for the protection of birds and marine creatures.

More than 5 thousand engineers and employees worked every day.

A study of the bridge was conducted in 1962. The report of its validity came in 1994. However, even after this the work was not completed. Its tender was issued in 2006, but no work was done. The bridge was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016.

In 2017, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed an agreement. The work on this project started in April 2018. The deadline is August 2023. An average of 5,403 workers and engineers worked every day to complete the plan. Seven workers also died during the construction of the bridge.
