Sony systems hacked by a new ransomware gang.
Sony systems hacked: It appears that Sony, the manufacturer of the PlayStation, was a victim of Ransomed.vc, a recently discovered hacking group that started its operations in September, according to a report from the Australian cybersecurity website Cyber Security Connect in an article dated September 25.
According to Cyber Security Connect, a number of internal materials from Sony were allegedly exposed as a result of the breach, including screenshots of their internal login page, a PowerPoint presentation with information about test benches, several Java files, and a comprehensive document repository with a mind-boggling 6,000 files.
“We have successfully gained access to all of Sony’s systems,” Ransomed.vc proudly declared. Instead of opting for a ransom, our intention is to sell the data, prompted by Sony’s unwillingness to cooperate. For Data Purchase Now date is available. WE ARE SELLING IT.”
Among the 6,000 files, a range of documentation can be found, including undisclosed “build log files,” a collection of Java resources, and HTML data. Many of these files are reportedly in Japanese. While Ransomed.vc has not specified a price for the data, they have provided contact information for Sony to reach out and indicated a “post date” of September 28, potentially when Ransomed.vc plans to release all the information.”
Ransomdvc: less expensive than a GDPR penalty?
“Ransomedvc was initially discovered by cybersecurity experts in August. The group describes itself as the leading expert in the field of “digital peace taxation” on its blog.
Security company Flashpoint reports that Ransomedvc has demanded ransoms ranging from $54,000 to $218,000. The organization argues that its demands are less onerous than the millions of euros in fines that businesses may incur for breaking Europe’s GDPR data legislation. According to Flashpoint, this practice of keeping their requests relatively low may be intended to increase the possibility that victims will heed them.
