Ram Mandir movement: 22 January 2024…after a wait of almost five hundred years, Lord Ram’s life will be consecrated in Ayodhya. The journey of building a grand Ram temple was very difficult. There was a debate. Injustice happened. Karsevaks were told. For years, the file was circulated inside the court. Ultimately, the court decided in favor of the Ram temple and now the huge Ram temple is ready.
Many people participated in this journey of struggle. Some became Deputy Prime Ministers, others Chief Ministers and Governors.
10 Important terms of Ram Mandir movement……
1. When Advani left for Ayodhya with a chariot, Ram wave arose.

The Rath Yatra of the country’s former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani is considered to be the biggest contribution to the Ram Temple movement. The roots of the movement started becoming stronger with this Rath Yatra. It is 1984. BJP had won the Lok Sabha elections for the first time. Indira Gandhi was the former Prime Minister. Everyone’s sympathy towards the Congress party led to victory in the elections.
BJP won only two seats. Party President Atal Bihari Vajpayee stepped down. Lal Krishna Advani led the party. Advani was more vocal about Hindutva policies. New rules started being made. BJP achieved the target of construction of Ram temple under the leadership of Advani.
1990 AD The Mandal Commission report was implemented to provide reservation to backward classes. RSS believed that it could divide the Hindu society. The meeting was called on 26 August. What should have been done for the Ram Mandir movement? RSS believed that the Ram Mandir movement would unite Hindus. In contrast, Advani’s movement already enjoyed support. He announced a Rath Yatra from Somnath in Gujarat to Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.
The day was 25 September 1990. A chariot-like vehicle was made and Advani’s Rath Yatra began. Before the start of the yatra, Advani said, “I swear by Ram, we will build the temple there.”The yatra started. On the way, people welcomed the Rath Yatra by ringing temple bells and thalis.
Narendra Modi made Advani’s visit to Gujarat successful. As soon as he reached Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, who was the Prime Minister at that time, arrested Advani from Samastipur district. But by then his Rath Yatra had taken its course.
2. People killed in Ram Mandir movement…Murli Manohar Joshi said.
BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi has participated the most in the movement, after Advani. BJP President Murli Manohar Joshi was the one who demolished the disputed structure in Ayodhya by the kar sevaks. He had study of every aspect of Ram Mandir movement.
Understanding this, the entire movement was planned and implemented. Media reports at the time created a sub-group. Senior leaders were involved in preparing notes and collecting information related to the temple. Joshi was very close to this group.
A meeting was held in Lucknow in December 1992. In this, Joshi asked people to go to Ayodhya the very next day. This also happened. Advani and Joshi went to Ayodhya. While going from Mathura to Ayodhya, Joshi said that there is no power which can stop the construction of Ram temple.
The incident took place on December 6, 1992 when they were in the disputed area. Uma Bharti hugged him when the disputed building collapsed. Joshi has won the elections of Varanasi, Allahabad (now Prayagraj) and Kanpur.
3. One should not stop till Ram temple is built – Kalyan Singh ji
It is the year 1991 and 1992. The Ram Mandir movement was at its peak. Ram’s followers were moving towards Ayodhya. UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh was decided to lead a group going towards Ayodhya. But he was afraid of being arrested on the way. Because the entire movement was likely to fail if they were arrested. As a result, Kalyan Singh will not participate in the trip at the last moment.
The journey reached Hanumangarhi. The policemen were shocked when they saw Kalyan Singh joining the yatra. Later Kalyan Singh addressed the public meeting. He said that one should not get tired until Ram temple is built. People got excited just by saying this. Later, due to this movement, Kalyan Singh also had to lose his chair.
But Kalyan Singh is no longer out to see the consecration in Ram temple. He died in August 2021 at the age of 89.
4. Vinay Katiyar, who joined people in the movement by going from village to village.
Vinay Katiyar is an important leader in the Ram Mandir movement. When Bajrang Dal was formed for the movement in 1984, RSS made Vinay Katiyar the first president. Under the leadership of Vinay, Bajrang Dal tried to unite the people in the Ram Mandir movement. Akharas connected people across the country.
Vinay told that at that time he had to go from village to village and connect with the people. The meetings took place at many places. Apart from this, at 7 am on December 6, the then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao had called Vinay so that he could know the situation in Ayodhya.
Vinay promised him to fix everything in Ayodhya. After this movement Vinay developed politically. Later he became the national general secretary of BJP. Elected thrice from Faizabad (Ayodhya) Lok Sabha constituency. He belonged to the Rajya Sabha as well. His position expired in 2018. Later he did not get the ticket again.
5. Uma Bharti who spoke harshly during the movement
Uma Bharti, who led the Ram Mandir movement and made significant contributions to it, is currently away from active politics. Additionally, he abstained from the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Now his political career is on hold, but it is difficult to forget his smiling picture after the fall of the BJP government on December 6, 1992.
Before the verdict, Uma directly reached out to Advani because of his harsh speeches during the agitation. After this, Uma was a minister in the governments of Narendra Modi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He also served as the CM of Madhya Pradesh from 2003 to 2004.
6. Sadhvi Ritambhara gave a new direction to the movement with her speech.
Apart from Uma Bharti, Sadhvi Ritambhara is also the second woman fire brand leader of the Ram Mandir movement. During the movement, audio cassettes of Ritambhara’s violent speeches were heard across the country. Now Ritambhara takes care of Vatsalya Gram in Vrindavan.
On his contribution, Ritambhara said, “I have contributed like a squirrel under the leadership of many great saints and great men.” Sadhvi Ritambhara is also among the first people invited on January 22:
7. Ashok Singhal, chief architect of Ram Mandir campaign.
Ashok Singhal, the international president of Vishwa Hindu Parishad for 20 years, is one of the people who gave birth to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. In 1984, at a parliament held at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi, Singhal formulated the strategy of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and mobilized 50 thousand kar sevaks from across the country.
Singhal had also led the Kar Sevaks who demolished the disputed building in 1992. During the movement, he had asked to donate stones and not money for the Ram temple. Ashoka was also called the chief architect of the Ram temple. Ashok remained the president of VHP till 2011 and then resigned due to his ill health. He died on 17 November 2015.
8. Real brothers who hoisted the saffron flag on the disputed structure… Ram and Sharad Kothri.
In 1980, two brothers from Kolkata, Ram Kumar Kothri, 23, and Sharad Kumar Kothri, 20, joined the Bajrang Dal. It is told in the book “Eyewitnesses of Ayodhya” that after 10 years both of them walked 200 kilometers and came to Ayodhya for car service.
On 30 October 1990, both of them participated in the first batch of Kar Sevaks. Sharad Kothri was the first person to climb the dome. Brother Ram also climbed up. There both of them hoisted the saffron flag. On 2 November, both of them were shot by the police while performing a car service.
Both died. His murder angered Hindus across the country. Thousands of people attended this funeral. After the murder, both of their names were added to the list of martyred heroes of the Janmabhoomi movement.
9. The one who created history from outside…Champat Rai.
Champat Rai, General Secretary of Ram Mandir Trust, is also one of those people who could not shine in the hustle and bustle of that time. But he has made a big contribution in laying the foundation of the movement. Champat had started collecting documents related to Ram Temple even before the controversial structure was demolished.
He had thousands of documents and every scripture, which he kept safe. Documents related to Ram temple were in his entire house. Champat remembered many things related to the temple land. Media reports said that Champat Rai had also given evidence to the lawyers fighting the Ram Janmabhoomi case.
10. Praveen Togadia, terrorist leader of Ram Janmabhoomi movement.
The active leaders of Vishwa Hindu Parishad during the movement were Vinay Katiyar and Praveen Togadia. Thousands of people used to give speeches in Praveen’s rallies during the movement. They contribute a lot in energizing the people in the movement. Still, he is not associated with Praveen Vishwa Hindu Parishad and is also not associated with the temple.
