An under-construction tunnel in Uttarkashi caved in, trapping forty workers: sending oxygen; NDF-SDRF rescue operation continues
Under-construction tunnel in Uttarkashi caved in: On 12 November, a tunnel under construction in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand collapsed. According to news agency PTI, about forty employees are trapped under the debris. The tunnel is being built between Silkyara and Dandalgaon on Brahmakamal and Yamunotri National Highway. At present, oxygen is being sent inside the tunnel.
The accident happened at four o’clock on Sunday morning. There is a 4 km long tunnel. 150 meter portion of the tunnel under construction was damaged. As per current estimates by officials, it may take two to three days to evacuate the employees. Vertical drilling machines are being made to cut the debris
An atmosphere of panic among the people of the area due to tunnel collapse
As soon as information about tunnel collapse was received, Uttarkashi SP Arpan Yaduvanshi reached the spot and started rescue operations. Employees of National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd., Fire Brigade, NDRF and SDRF have also reached the spot.
These all-weather tunnels are being built under the Char Dham Road Project. After its construction, the distance from Uttarkashi to Yamunotri Dham will reduce by 26 km.
