Duke vs UNC: Props for the men’s basketball match between No. 3 North Carolina and No. 7 Duke.

Duke vs UNC: What more needs to be said about this matchup than has already been said? Both teams enter as the ACC’s top teams, and while North Carolina appears to be the stronger team on paper, Duke just finished its finest game of the year against Virginia Tech.

However, when these blue bloods go to court against one another, none of that appears to matter. It will all come down to making shots in this game. Will the Tar Heels’ formidable perimeter defense, which allows opponents to shoot under 30% from beyond the arc against them, be able to contain Duke’s shooters or can the Blue Devils continue to shoot the ball well from long range? Conversely, will Cormac be transferred to Notre Dame?

Duke vs UNC

The answer to these questions, which might go either way, will be vital to the game on Saturday. That being said, this season, North Carolina has demonstrated a greater ability to withstand adverse weather. Against Arkansas and Georgia Tech, the Blue Devils were unable to recover from a cold shooting game, and in some of their most recent victories, they even staggered to the finish line. The Tar Heels have demonstrated the potential to overcome opponents with strong second half, even if they lost to the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday at McCamish Pavilion. They trailed Florida State by five points at the half and trailed N.C. State by two points halfway through the second half, but they ultimately won both games with ease.

Duke vs UNC: Above/Below 150.5 overall points.

Although this choice appears to be lot simpler on the surface, it is also a bit close. This year’s team is more defensively minded than many Tar Heel teams, who prefer to run up the score and make the game resemble a track meet. Additionally, the Blue Devils play at a poor pace; according to CBSB stats, their 67.3 possessions per 40 minutes are just in the 47th percentile nationally. Lastly, neither of the two teams’ meetings from the previous year saw a score of more than 120 points, much less 150.5.

Nonetheless, the top two scoring teams in the ACC are North Carolina and Duke. The Blue Devils do not give up the ball too often, and the Tar Heels will continue to try to get out in transition. This score may rise quickly if things heat up on both sides.

Duke vs UNC

Watch graduate center Armando Bacot closely in this one, especially his offensive glass. He will probably have a greater chance of hitting if he is restrained; Duke will slow the game down and North Carolina will receive fewer shots. This is what I believe Kyle Filipowski, the sophomore center, and Ryan Young, the backup, will be concentrating on, thus I believe this game could end up being a rock fight.

Jared McCain made 2.5 three-pointers.

McCain has led the Blue Devils to a 13-1 record when he makes multiple 3-pointers; their lone defeat came at home against Pittsburgh when they were without sophomore forward Mark Mitchell and senior guard Jeremy Roach. Additionally, McCain will probably face the third-best defensive guard for the Tar Heels on Saturday. Even though I predicted North Carolina to win, I still believe McCain will win this contest. He has proven throughout the season that he can make clutch shots, and I think he will do it again against the Tar Heels. His performance won’t, in my opinion, be enough to put Duke ahead, but he will undoubtedly be crucial to keeping the game close in the end.
