Earthquake in California: Earthquake of magnitude 4.2 felt in Southern California.

Earthquake in California: On Wednesday night, a large portion of Southern California felt the effects of a magnitude 4.2 earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the earthquake, which had its epicenter near San Bernardino, occurred at 7:43 p.m. and caused light shaking throughout the Inland Empire, including in Riverside, Fontana, Rialto, Rancho Cucamonga, Moreno Valley, and Redlands.

The Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale describes light shaking as having the sensation of a large vehicle striking a structure.

About a mile away from the epicenter of the earthquake, Colton felt a tremor. However, as of approximately 9 p.m., police had not “received a single call” for assistance, Sgt. Mike Farcas told The Times. That assertion was confirmed by the police in Rialto, which is roughly two miles from the epicenter of the earthquake, and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

In the whole region, including in Orange County, Long Beach, and Los Angeles, there was milder shaking. Social media users reported that they could feel the trembling in downtown Los Angeles, Yorba Linda, and Ontario. A Rowland Heights resident reported seeing a three-second tremble, similar to the motion of swiftly moving waves on a boat.

Half a mile north of the San Bernardino Depot rail station and 1.5 miles southwest of San Bernardino’s downtown were the epicenter’s locations. One of the most active and possibly dangerous fault lines in the area, the San Jacinto fault, is where the earthquake started, and its mapped traces are very close to it.

The San Jacinto fault extends southeast from the Cajon Pass in San Bernardino County to the Mexican border, covering a distance of approximately 130 miles. Seismologists are concerned about the San Jacinto fault because it passes through the heart of the Inland Empire, passing through the communities of San Bernardino, Colton, Moreno Valley, Redlands, Loma Linda, Hemet, and San Jacinto, as well as close to Fontana, Riverside, and Rialto.

Another reason why the Inland Empire is more susceptible to earthquakes is the absence of seismic retrofitting. Hundreds of historic brick structures in over a dozen Inland Empire cities, including Riverside, Pomona, and San Bernardino, have been classified as dangerous but have not been modified despite decades of warnings, according to a Times investigation released in 2018.

Seismologist Lucy Jones stated on social media that the depth of Wednesday’s earthquake, which was more than nine miles, was “pretty deep.” The most recent earthquake occurred roughly 15 miles southeast of the one that struck the region on January 5 and had a magnitude of 4.2. That earthquake had rattled the isolated village of Lytle Creek in San Bernardino County’s San Gabriel Mountains.

Jones posted on social media, “The two earthquakes are probably on the same fault, but they are far enough apart in both time and space to not have an obvious correlation.”

On New Year’s Day, off the coast of Los Angeles County, Southern California experienced its first earthquake of at least magnitude 4 for the year. The epicenter of that magnitude 4.1 earthquake was located roughly ten miles southwest of San Pedro.

A recent three-year data sample shows that there are, on average, 25 earthquakes in California and Nevada per year with magnitudes between 4.0 and 5.0.
