Earthquake in China: On Monday night (December 18), a seismic event with a magnitude of 6.2 struck the Gansu and Qinghai provinces in northwest China. According to the China Earthquake Network Center (CENC), the earthquake’s intensity was reported to be 6.2. Reports indicate that the tremors were felt as far as Pakistan.
Casualties and Injuries Reported in Gansu and Qinghai
According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, approximately 111 people lost their lives in both provinces, with over 200 individuals sustaining injuries. Gansu reported 100 casualties, while Qinghai, a neighboring province, reported 11 fatalities.
Epicenter and Discrepancies in Magnitude Assessment
The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the border of Qinghai, in Jishishan County of Gansu, where the ground was 10 kilometers below the surface. However, the U.S. The Geological Survey stated the earthquake’s magnitude to be 5.9, indicating discrepancies in assessments. The infrastructure sustained significant damage as a result of the earthquake.
Impact on Infrastructure and Presidential Appeal
As per CCTV, the earthquake resulted in significant damage to water and power lines, as well as disruptions in traffic and communication. Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered rescue teams to focus on the safety of people and their property affected by the earthquake. He urged the implementation of appropriate measures for search, rescue, and arrangements for the affected individuals.

Frequent Earthquakes in China
China frequently experiences earthquakes. In August 2023, a mild earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 occurred in eastern China, leaving 23 people injured and several buildings collapsed. In September 2022, Sichuan Province experienced a 6.6 magnitude earthquake, resulting in approximately 100 casualties.
In 2008, a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 claimed the lives of over 87,000 people, including 5,335 schoolchildren. The region’s approach to managing natural disasters is still largely reliant on earthquake readiness and response.
