First private spacecraft lands on Moon’s South Pole: US company nominated; Second country after India’s Chandrayaan-3
First private spacecraft lands on Moon’s South Pole: US company nominated; Second country after India’s Chandrayaan-3.
First private spacecraft lands on Moon’s South Pole: Lander Odysseus of America’s private company Intuitive Machines has reached the South Pole of the Moon. It was launched on 15 February 2024.
The landing of the spacecraft took place at 4:53 pm Indian time. With this, the first spacecraft of a private company, Odysseus, has landed on the Moon.
At the same time, the second country which has landed on the South Pole of the Moon is America. On August 23, 2023, India made a successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the South Pole. Before landing, Odysseus’s navigation system went haywire. Despite this the landing took place.
The American magazine ‘New York Times’ said that no information has been received about Odysseus after the landing. Mission director Tim Crane said that we can say without any doubt that Odysseus is on the surface of the moon.
Will study the dust present on the moon.
The goal of the Odysseus Moon mission is to study the dust present on the Moon. In fact, astronauts returning from Apollo missions reported that dust had ruined their equipment. Now scientists want to explain how the dust flying from spacecraft remains in the air and then settles on the Moon surface.
Preparations to send humans to the place where the landing took place.
BBC, British media reported that the place where lander Odysseus landed is called Malapert. Sunlight does not come here. This is a plain area near a ditch. Malapert was a 17th century Belgian astronomer. Experts believe that there is water here, but it is like ice.
This area is in the list of places where the US space agency NASA wants to send astronauts under the Artemis mission.
The speed of the spacecraft had increased.
Although this is Odysseus private moon mission, but its original objective is the American space agency NASA. NASA itself has made six instruments to be used in the mission.
Media reported that the speed of the spacecraft had increased before landing. This was the reason why Odysseus took another round of the Moon. Landing time changed due to increased rotation. It was earlier scheduled to make a soft landing at 4.20 am Indian time.
Hovering was done for 19 minutes before landing.
landing Date
- Before landing, Odysseus completed an orbit of the Moon. After this it moved towards the surface. After this the speed of the spacecraft decreased.
- The landing location was already selected. The cameras installed in the spacecraft were telling the mission control room its exact location. They were cross checked or matched with previously fed data. Later the laser beam was applied on the surface. Solar panels have been installed in this spacecraft. It will be charged from there for seven days after landing.
After 51 years an American spacecraft landed on the moon.
For the first time in 51 years, an American mission has attempted to land on the moon. In 1972, the Apollo 17 mission made the first soft landing on the Moon. In 2022, America sent Artemis-1 mission to the moon. But he did not dare to land the spacecraft on the moon. Arctime-1 had orbited the Moon.
NASA officials said that efforts to soft land on the moon will continue. As a result, in November 2024, Astrobotic Company will launch the Griffin lander from NASA’s Viper rover to land on the Moon’s South Pole.
Peregrine-1 moon mission failed.
The second government mission in the US is the Odysseus Mission. On January 8, 2024, America launched its first private Moon mission. However, the American private company’s Peregrine-1 lander could not land on the moon. This mission failed due to fuel leakage and battery charging.
India was the first to reach the South Pole.
India had started Chandrayaan, a mission to explore the moon. On August 23, 2023, Chandrayaan-3 created history by landing on the South Pole of the Moon. India became the first country who successfully land on the south pole of the Moon. At 5.44 pm, Chandrayaan-3 started the automatic landing process from an altitude of 30 km, which was completed in the next 20 minutes. At 6:04 in the evening, Chandrayaan-3 lander flew to the Moon for the first time.
After reaching the moon, the lander sent a message that it had reached its destination. Now the rover will start its search by coming out of the ramp. On July 14, ISRO had inaugurated Chandrayaan from Sriharikota. On the 41st day, a flight was made to the south pole of the Moon. At the same time, so far four countries have made soft landing on the moon. This includes China, India, America and Russia.
