Ishan Won’t Play Tests Against South Africa: Returns to India for Family Reasons; KS Bharat Inclusion in Squad

Ishan Won’t Play Tests Against South Africa: Wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan has withdrawn from the Test series against South Africa citing personal reasons. Due to these personal reasons, he sought permission from the BCCI to stay in India, which was approved by the BCCI.

KS Bharat to Replace Ishan in Squad

Now, KS Bharat will be part of the Indian squad in place of Ishan. Apart from Bharat, KL Rahul is the other wicketkeeper in the squad. Prior to Ishan, fast bowler Mohammed Shami was ruled out of the Test series due to injury.

Ishan to Return to India Soon

Ishan Kishan was part of the T20 squad in South Africa. The T20 series ended in a draw with 1-1 in three matches, with one game being inconclusive. Although Kishan did not get a chance to play a T20 match, he is not part of the ODI squad. The Test series is scheduled to start from December 26, so Ishan will return to India soon.

Debut in West Indies

Ishan Kishan made his Test debut in the West Indies in July this year. In two Test matches against the West Indies, he amassed 78 runs overall, including a fifty. KL Rahul is already part of the Test squad, making it challenging for Ishan to get an opportunity. Apart from Tests, Ishan has played 27 ODIs and 32 T20s for India.

Shami Ruled Out Due to Fitness Issues

Mohammed Shami, who took the most wickets (24) in the ODI World Cup, is also out of the Test series. He is nursing an ankle injury, and his treatment has been ongoing since the World Cup. All players of the squad arrived in South Africa on December 15, but Shami was not among them. Unable to clear the fitness test, he has been excluded from the squad.

Possible Debut for Krishna Due to Shami’s Absence

In Shami’s absence, Krishna could get a chance to make his Test debut. In the first Test, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will be the remaining two pacers. If the pitch favors fast bowlers, Shardul Thakur could also be the fourth pacer.

The first Test of the series will take place from December 26 to 30, and the second Test is scheduled from January 3 to 7, 2024.

India’s Test Squad: Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prasidh Krishna, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah (Vice-Captain), and KS Bharat (Wicketkeeper) are the players who make up the squad that captain Rohit Sharma leads.
