Premier League: Declan Rice Caps a seven-goal thriller for Arsenal against Luton Town in a fightback
Arsenal: Declan Rice’s last-minute goal against Luton on Tuesday completed Arsenal’s exhilarating comeback, pushing them five points ahead atop the Premier League standings. In the second half of a thrilling match at Kenilworth Road, Mikel Arteta’s team was behind 3-2 due to two costly errors made by goalkeeper David Raya.
However, Kai Havertz’s equalizer and Rice’s header late into stoppage time saw Arsenal rally to maintain their advantage at the top of the league. The exuberant celebrations exhibited by Arteta and his team highlighted the importance of a tough victory that will strengthen the confidence that Arsenal can ultimately secure their first championship since 2004.
“The spirit of the squad, the way we fought, demonstrated our skills when necessary, and never gave up. We took a risk and were rewarded today. Huge congrats to Luton; I know that night was difficult. Everyone on the squad is leaping, according to our conversation. Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli had started the score, but Gabriel Osho of Luton had equalized and Gabriel Jesus had given the visitors the lead again shortly before halftime.
Raya’s first mistake set up Elijah Adebayo’s second equalizer for Luton shortly after halftime, and the Spaniard’s second blunder let Ross Barkley score.
However, England midfielder Rice had the final say to give Arsenal six straight victories in all competitions following their contentious loss at Newcastle with the use of VAR.
If second-place Liverpool defeats bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United on Wednesday, they will be able to catch up to Arsenal by just two points.
Since the beginning of the previous season, Arteta’s team had remained unbeaten on the road, winning 17 of those contests. The Gunners’ first visit to Kenilworth Road in 32 years resulted in their first victory there since 1984.
Arsenal: RICHE TO THE VETTING
Five minutes after Arsenal were undone by a well-executed corner routine, Osho scored his first Premier League goal, beating Raya with a header from ten yards out.
At the end of the half, Jesus gave Arsenal a lead start again by heading in tight from Ben White’s looping cross.
In the 49th minute, Luton’s mastery of set pieces produced yet another twist in the story when, following Raya’s flap at Alfie Doughty’s corner, Adebayo sprang highest to head in from close range.
This season, Rob Edwards’ team has the most set-piece goals in the Premier League—more than half of them have come from free kicks, corners, and penalties.
After another mistake by Raya in the 57th minute, the Hatters scored a third goal without having to display their superior dead-ball play.
Barkley, a former midfielder for Chelsea, dribbled past White inside the box and tried a weak save from Raya, but the shot squirmed.
Three minutes later, however, Havertz gave Arsenal a one-goal lead again when he tucked in from close range after Jesus used remarkable power to elude his defender and then found the German running.
Arsenal continued to battle for the victory and finished their valiant comeback in the seventh minute of stoppage time, demonstrating the resilience of future winners.
While Arteta was doing a happy jig on the touchline, Rice met Martin Odegaard’s cross with a glancing header that nestled in the far corner.
Hwang Hee-chan completed Wolves’ 1-0 victory over Burnley at Molineux in the other match on Tuesday.
