The Himachal Pradesh Police took action on Monday against the owner of an SUV suspected of crossing the Chandra River in the Lahaul and Spiti district. The incident, captured in a viral video, shows the SUV navigating the river, presumably to evade heavy traffic. The vehicle has been penalized under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and in an effort to prevent such offenses in the future, the district police have deployed personnel at the location, as stated by SP Mayank Chaudhry, quoted by news agency ANI.
Tourist Influx Overwhelms Himachal Pradesh During Christmas Weekend
The hill state of Himachal Pradesh faced a significant challenge over the Christmas weekend as heavy traffic and an unprecedented number of tourists inundated the region. Following snowfall at the Atal Tunnel on Saturday, a record-breaking 28,210 vehicles crossed the tunnel on Sunday, according to Lahaul and Spiti police. The rush to visit the tunnel led to a surge in hotel occupancy in key hill resorts like Shimla and Manali, reaching 90 percent.

Shimla, the state capital, experienced traffic chaos as thousands of vehicles crowded the city, causing congestion at various locations. The situation was exacerbated by the arrival of 55,345 vehicles in Shimla over the past 72 hours, as reported by Shimla Police in a Facebook post on Monday evening. The holiday destinations of Manali, Kasol, and Banjar/Tirthan Valley witnessed a substantial influx of vehicles, a phenomenon that Himachal Pradesh contends with annually during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
