2025 4Runner: Toyota has finally arrived and looks to be worth the wait.

2025 4Runner: Although the fifth-generation off-road SUV enjoyed a prosperous 15-year life, it is easy to move on to the sixth generation due to its improved structure and new powertrains.

  • There are two new trims in the 2025 Toyota 4Runner lineup: an overland-focused Trailhunter and a high-end Platinum. These trims join the SR 5, SR Sport, SR Off-Road, Limited and SR Pro.
  • Most models will be powered by an i-Force 2.4-liter turbo four, which produces 278 horsepower. The second model is an i-Force Max Hybrid supplied with an additional electric motor, producing a total output of 326 horses.
  • The new Four Runner, which looks more like a Tacoma SUV than decades past, nods to its past with several exterior styling cues and interior features shared with recently released pickups.

After 15 years of success, the fifth generation of Toyota 4Runner decided to debut the sixth generation of the model in 2025. The popularity of the previous model has hardly waned, but its time has come due to the advent of the TGNA-F frame and suspension architecture, eight-speed automatic transmission and a new generation of engines, which recently debuted online with the latest Toyota Tacoma. is available. The Land Cruiser was reintroduced.

2025 4Runner:

Identical to a Tacoma SUV More Than Before

The 4Runner’s new front-end styling is very similar to the Tacoma carryover, but not directly. It also has a similar gait, but has a three-inch increase in overall body width and a wider track. Like the Tacoma, most of the additional width comes from large fender flares to cover the suspension’s larger track. The Toyo Open Country AT III tires fitted to the TRD Pro and TrailHunter are size 265/70R-18 and size 33 inches, but some specific dimensions have not been released yet.

Like the Tacoma, larger tires are now possible by lengthening the wheelbase of the Four Runner at the front. It was difficult to fit larger tires on earlier versions of both trucks because there was very little daylight in the area. For the 4Runner, this equates to a 2.4-inch wheelbase increase (from 109.8 to 112.2 inches), matching the new Land Cruiser Lexus GX550 and Lexus LX600. Additionally, the Four Runner’s latest design extends beyond the rear window, making the rear end appear even more muscular, while the upper edge of the rear window is covered by the roof.

2025 4Runner:

The instrument cluster, center stack, and all the various buttons, switches, and knobs in the new Tacoma look nearly identical (right down to the controls for the part-time running four-wheel transfer case on some versions of the Platinum and Limited). The 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen is only available on some trims, standard on others, and comes with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In addition to the diverse material and color options for the Trail hunter and TRD Pro we sampled; the overall interior styling is also a dead ringer. This is good news because our previous test of the Tacoma TRD Off-Road showed that the interior is very thoughtfully designed, has convenient storage features.

Two Well-Known New Engines

Under the hood, the base engine of the 2025 4Runner is a 2.4-liter I-Force, a turbocharged inline four with 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Tacoma. This engine is backed only by an eight-speed automatic, available in the SR5 and TRD Sport, as well as basic fitment in the TRD Limited and Off-Road. When comparing it to the recent Chevy Colorado ZR2 and Tacoma TRD Off-Road, we were very impressed with this setup, where the I-Force punches well above its weight by matching the significantly more powerful Chevy step for step. 6.8. Second time 60 mph.At the time, the outgoing 4Runner’s 4.0-liter V-6 put out only 270 hp and 278 pound-feet, and that deficit was offset by being equipped with an older five-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy information for the new model has not been released, but it will be more powerful than a V-6 or five-speed combo.

The 2.4-liter i-Force Max 4Runner Hybrid, with an electric motor mated between a 278-hp engine and an eight-speed transmission, delivers a total output of 326 HP and 465 pound-feet of torque. This will be optional in Road Transport and Limited; The full-luxe Platinum, Trailhunter and TRD Pro will have it as standard fitment. We haven’t seen this engine in a Tacoma yet, so we haven’t tested it. But the extra power and torque are necessary to make the already strong combination even more attractive. The main objective here is not to increase fuel economy over the standard setup, but fuel economy should increase anyway because the system can recapture energy during deceleration and strategically redeploy it later.

2025 4Runner:

An optional third-row seat returns to the Four Runner lineup. Although Toyota isn’t saying anything, we think the current i-Force will be limited to engines. The hybrid battery pack lives under the rear cargo floor, so that powertrain can’t have a third-row seat. The third row SR5 and those Limited cars do not have the hybrid powertrain option that will hopefully be available. Access to the third row has been improved by making changes to the rear seat. It replaces the current two-step flip/fold design.

New Suspension Thinking: 2025 4Runner.

This suspension layout utilizes a control-arm suspension at the front and a multilink live axle arrangement at the rear as the TGNA-F architecture is shared with the Four Runner Tacoma and Land Cruiser. It’s the same basic concept as before, but the geometry has changed. Although little is known about the offerings across the model range, we do know that the TRD Pro will be equipped with Fox QUS 3 dampers with manually adjustable compression “clicker” adjustment, while the Trailhunter will make do with the RB/Old Man Emu. Both will have external reservoirs behind them.

Like the Tacoma, the TRD Pro’s suspension tuning will be more capable of high-speed desert running, while the TrailHunter is built for overland-style off-road exploration and rockier trailing. As such, the TrailHunter has additional skid plates and stronger rock sliders attached directly to the frame. We noticed there was a built-in air compressor, which looked to be stock, as well as a snorkel air intake, which may or may not be standard equipment. Only time will tell.
