After his departure to free India, Lieutenant General M Cariappa becomes the first Indian military officer.
- On January 15, KM Cariappa took over the leadership of the Indian Army from General Francis Butcher. This was a very special time for the Indian Army. On this day, for the first time an Indian led the country’s army. Therefore, Indian Army Day is celebrated every year on 15 January.

KM Cariappa was the first Field Marshal of independent India. K M Cariappa Kodandera Madappa Cariappa was his full name. M Cariappa has achieved many achievements. This led to the India-Pakistan war. KM Cariappa died in 1993 at the age of 94.
