Kevin McCarthy as speaker in historic vote is removed by House

Washington, DC—The House of Representatives on Tuesday took the unprecedented action of removing a speaker from office, less than nine months after Kevin McCarthy won a dramatic 15-round floor fight.
The California Republican won by a vote of 216 to 210, insisting he would “never concede defeat.” The office of Speaker of the House, the second-highest ranking member of the US presidency, was declared vacant following the votes.
All 208 Democrats, along with just eight GOP rebels, decided to vacate the speakership. This is the first time that lawmakers have formally decided to remove a sitting speaker in the middle of a term. The Republican majority, 210, voted to keep McCarthy in power, but it was Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. That wasn’t enough to stop the effort, led by Joe Biden, who for weeks had been accused of breaking promises made to the Conservatives.
The historic vote threw the GOP-controlled House into chaos as lawmakers had to decide the next step. The session ended with an additional mystery: It was announced that senior McCarthy aide and now Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., had been included in the secret list given to the clerk in January. an article
McHenry angrily slammed the gavel into the Speaker’s chair, where he would serve in an interim capacity.
In a private meeting after lawmakers voted, McCarthy told his GOP colleagues that he would not run for speaker again because he did not have the support to defeat his political opponent. Shortly afterward, he attacked Gaetz and other rebels at a packed news conference, calling them fake conservatives.
McCarthy told reporters, “They’re not conservative. Because they’re angry and anarchic, they don’t get a chance to say they’re conservative. I’m not a member of this party. The principle of Reagan’s party was to govern conservatively.” Can be done if you are religious.
They don’t qualify for the designation since they aren’t conservatives, he remarked.

Before the vote, a parade of prominent McCarthy aides gave speeches in favor of retaining McCarthy. House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y. McCarthy was described as a “happy warrior” and having “typical American grit,” while Rep. Garrett Graves, R-La. McCarthy was referred to as “the greatest speaker in modern history.”
Tom Cole, the chairman of the rules committee and a Republican from Oklahoma, stated, “I recognize that my friends on the other side have a very complex set of partisan, personal, and political calculations — and I certainly wouldn’t give them any advice about this.” House Democrats were informed by a top McCarthy official that Gates’ initiative had failed.

When Cole finished his speech, almost the entire GOP side of the House stood and thanked him.
She said Gaetz remonstrated from the Democratic side of the aisle because Republicans blocked him from three GOP microphones on the floor.
“The one who speaks anarchy is McCarthy.” “Anarchy is someone we can’t trust at his word,” Gaetz told Cole. “In my opinion, opposing Kevin McCarthy in a vote is not anarchy. $33 trillion in debt is anarchy in my view. Facing an annual deficit of $2.2 trillion is anarchy in my view.
Gaetz had threatened for weeks to seek votes to expel McCarthy if he passed a smaller government funding bill based on Democratic votes. When McCarthy did the same last weekend to prevent a shutdown, Gaetz moved against him.
