Following the IPL match between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday night, Mumbai’s wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan met with BCCI Secretary Jay Shah on the field. Pictures of their meeting have gone viral on social media, with Mumbai’s captain Hardik Pandya also visible in the photos.
Kishan’s Exclusion from Central Contract
Kishan and Iyer were left out of the domestic tournaments by the BCCI due to not playing in the domestic tournament. Reports suggested that there was discontent between Ishan and the BCCI, but after the Gujarat and Mumbai match, Jay Shah met Ishan warmly, and they had a conversation. In the photos, Jay Shah can be seen smiling and talking to Ishan with his hand on his shoulder.
Controversy After South Africa Tour
The dispute between the BCCI and Ishan escalated when the wicketkeeper-batsman returned midway from the South Africa tour citing personal reasons, wanting a break due to traveling with the team for a long time. However, Ishan did not return to India and instead went to Dubai. Subsequently, he was not selected for the T20 series against Afghanistan and was not chosen for the five-match Test series against England. Indian coach Rahul Dravid had advised Ishan to play in the Ranji Trophy before returning to the national team, but Ishan chose to focus on IPL preparations.
Mandatory Participation in Domestic Tournaments
The BCCI had made it mandatory for all players included in the central contract to play for their respective domestic teams. However, Ishan did not comply with this requirement. A similar situation occurred with Shreyas Iyer, who cited back pain and did not participate in the Ranji Trophy.

Ishan Kishan, who returned to the field after a long time, proved to be a flop in the first match of the IPL 2024 season against Gujarat Titans. He returned to the pavilion without opening the account in this match and did not make a good start in the 17th season of IPL.
