Meteor shower: On any given night, away from the city lights, you can watch a meteor streak across the sky as it flies overhead. But on certain dates, skywatchers can see multiple flares erupting in the darkness like a meteor shower.
The next event, the Orionids, will last until about November 22, but will reach its peak tonight, Friday, October 20, through the morning of Saturday, October 21.
A meteor shower occurs when our planet runs into a field of debris left by icy comets or rocky asteroids orbiting the Sun. Blazing rays of light burn in the atmosphere. The regularity of orbital mechanics means that any given meteor shower occurs at approximately the same time each year, with the changing phases of the bright Moon being the main factor affecting the visibility of a meteor shower.
After hitting Halley’s comet in May, Earth runs into the debris left behind by the comet in October, causing the Orionid meteor shower. It is a medium-powered shower, producing 10–20 bursts per hour, but in some years it can produce up to 70 bursts.
This year, the moon will be about a third full, but it will set around midnight, removing its influence on the sky. The shower will be visible from anywhere in the world from midnight to four in the morning local time.
How to see a shower
The best practice is to head out to the countryside and stay away from artificial light sources as much as possible. People in rural areas may get the facility to simply go out. But city dwellers also have options. There are astronomy societies in many cities, and they usually have a designated dark sky region. “I would suggest contacting them and finding out where their location is,” Robert Lunsford, secretary general of the International Meteor Organization, said in an interview with The New York Times in 2022.
Meteor showers are generally best when the sky is darkest, after midnight but before sunrise. To really see the variety of meteors possible, wait 30 to 45 minutes after arriving at your viewing location. This will help your eyes from darkness as well. Then go back and get a larger view of the night sky. Clear nights, more plants, and times when the moon is over rocks or skeletons are best. Mr. Lansford suggested a good rule of thumb: “The more stars you can see, the more meteors you can see.” Meteor showers don’t require binoculars or telescopes, and using them will actually obstruct your view.
How showers of meteors develop
Though in certain situations many meteors can still be seen before or after that particular night, each shower peaks on a specified day when Earth is crashing into the densest part of the debris field.
The constellation from which a shower seems to streak in the sky serves as its eponym. However, it’s not necessary to know every aspect of the celestial sphere inside and out. During any given shower, meteors should be seen all throughout the sky.
