Trains collide in Andhra Pradesh: Two trains collided in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday evening. 9 passengers died in the accident, while 13 people died on Monday morning. Five hundred passengers have been injured in the accident.The Vizianagaram district’s Alamanda and Kankatpally are where the accident happened.
East Coast Railway CPRO Biswajit Sahu said that the accident occurred due to human error. The driver of the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada passenger train overshot the signal, due to which it collided with the Visakhapatnam-Palasa passenger train.
Emergency Number Provided from Indian Railway
Railways has issued emergency numbers. East Coast Railways has issued emergency numbers. These include Bhubaneswar- 0674-2301625, 2301525, 2303069 and Waltair Division- 0891- 2885914.
Central government announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the central government has proposed a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased, Rs 2 lakh to the injured and Rs 50,000 in case of minor injuries.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy ordered officials to give ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh each to the injured.
Attacking the Centre, Kharge said that talks about security have gone astray.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday targeted the Modi government over the Vijayanagar train accident and said that as much enthusiasm is shown in flagging off trains with much fanfare, equal enthusiasm should be shown in taking action for the safety of passengers. He said in X post that he is sad to know about Vijayanagar train accident.
Railway Minister announces Kavach system to reduce accidents.
In May 2022, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced the train armor system. “Kavach is a technology of automatic rail protection,” he said. This means that if two trains accidentally come on the same track, there will be a brake brake to stop the train. This will prevent accidents. After this statement of the Railway Minister, many trains have been derailed.
After a year of trials, the armor was fitted to only 65 engines.
In May 2022, Ashwini Vaishnav had announced to equip the engines with safety shields to reduce railway accidents. Out of 19 railway zones, the process of installing armor has started only in Secunderabad after a year. There are 13,215 electric locomotives in the country. Of these, only 65 locos are equipped with engine armour. Indian Railways has set a target of building at least 5000 km of routes across the country in the 2022–2023 financial year.
How does rail armor prevent a collision between two trains?
In this technology, engine micro processor, global positioning system (GPS) and signal system and control tower are connected through radio communication. This prevents the collision of two engines with the train’s rail armor system.
The train accident in Odisha is heart-wrenching. So far 288 people have died. Most of the passengers have been injured. Railways has confirmed 650 injured. The news of the accident came on Friday evening, then no one knew that it could be so terrible.
The CBI charge sheet names three railway officials who were involved in the train accident that took place in Balasore, Odisha on June 2. All three have been charged with culpable homicide and destruction of evidence. These include Technician Pappu Kumar, Senior Section Engineer Arun Kumar Mohanta and Section Engineer Mohammad Aamir Khan. On July 7, CBI arrested all three accused.
